Winter chills just mean that it's November, and Arrow Video are set to heat things up with a George Romero box set, a blaxploitation chiller, classic horror in steelbook form, a modern-day Russian black comedy, and a cult thriller directed by Steve Buscemi! With plenty of lavish packaging and limited edition items, Christmas has come early for film collectors!

Legendary horror cinema innovator, George A Romero, is responsible for arguably the most influential zombie films of all time. But he doesn't just make undead epics, and the three films collected here in the box set George Romero Between Night and Dawn - There's Always Vanilla, Season of the Witch and The Crazies - showcase the versatility and dynamism of this American auteur. As well as the films there are Romero interviews and documentaries and much more.

Next is the stunning debut of of the blaxploitation favorite JD's Revenge, a story about a man possessed by the spirit of a murderous gangster. Featuring Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett Jr (An Officer and a Gentleman), this is alternately tough and terrifying - a Blaxploitation gem waiting to be rediscovered.

Stephen King was once famously quoted as saying, "I have seen the future of horror...his name is Clive Barker." That future was realized in 1987 with the release of Barker's directorial debut Hellraiser. Introducing the world to the iconic Pinhead and his sadistic band of Cenobites, Hellraiser became an instant genre classic upon release and remains one of the most frighteningly original visions in horror. Now fans can own it in the form of an incredibly awesome steelbook with tons of extras.

The last of the Arrow Video titles for November is Animal Factory. Directed by Steve Buscemi, the film stars Willem Dafoe and Edward Furlong as they make their way through life inside a maximum security prison. This was Buscemi's second stint in the director's chair and sees him marshalling a formidable ensemble cast, for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system.

Finally, there is one release from Arrow Academy US - Zoology, an extraordinary film about a zoo worker who grows a tail, that proves that challenging, thought-provoking art house cinema is alive and well in the 21st century. In turns, disturbing, uplifting, and blackly comic, this is a challenging and irresistible contemporary fable, that deftly mixes the deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki with a poignant examination of social issues including loneliness and aging.

George Romero Between Night and Dawn Limited Edition [Dual Format] (11/14)

George Romero's name may be synonymous with the living dead subgenre, but his filmography is far richer and more varied than his reputation as "the zombie guy" would suggest. Following the breakout success of his debut feature Night of the Living Dead, the director would embark upon a series of projects which demonstrate a master filmmaker with more than mere gut-munching on his mind.

In There's Always Vanilla, young drifter Chris and beautiful model Lynn embark upon a tumultuous relationship which seems doomed from the outset. Season of the Witch (released theatrically as Hungry Wives) follows the exploits of Joan Mitchell - a housewife who seeks to escape the confines of her humdrum suburban existence through a flirtation with witchcraft. Lastly, The Crazies sees Romero returning to firmer horror territory as a small rural town finds itself in the grip of an infection which send its hosts into a violent, homicidal frenzy.

Taken together, these three films, made in the period between Romero's celebrated living dead outings Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, serve to shine a light on the broader thematic concerns and auteurist leanings of a skilled craftsman too often pigeonholed within the genre.

Based on his own novella The Hellbound Heart, Barker's Hellraiser sees Larry (Andrew Robinson) and his wife Julia (Clare Higgins) move into their new home, unaware that something evil lurks beneath the floorboards of the dilapidated house - something that wants human blood...

Troubled youth Ron Decker (Edward Furlong, American History X) is sentenced to a ten-year stint in the notorious San Quentin State Prison for a drug-dealing conviction. Inexperienced in the ways of prison life, he's taken under the wing of Earl Copen (Willem Dafoe, To Live and Die in LA), an experienced con with the entire prison in the palm of his hand - inmates and guards alike. But as Ron grows increasingly cocky in his privileged role as Earl's confidant, is he in danger of biting off more than he can chew with some of the jail's more volatile inhabitants?

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Eddie Bunker (Reservoir Dogs), Animal Factory was Steve Buscemi's (Lonesome Jim, Interview) second stint in the director's chair and sees him marshaling a formidable ensemble cast, including Bunker, Danny Trejo (Machete) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), for a powerful and sincere account of the men caught up in the penal system and the deals they cut with each other, and themselves, in order to survive.

- Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

Zoology [Blu-ray and DVD] (11/14)

Writer-director Ivan I. Tverdovsky's prize-winning sophomore feature (Special Prize of the Jury at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Best Picture at Fantastic Fest) deftly mixes the deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki with a poignant examination of social issues including loneliness and aging.

Natasha is a middle-aged admin employee at a zoo where her female co-workers take pleasure in making fun of her. She lives with her God-fearing mother and leads a dull existence without prospects, until one day she grows a tail. Medical examinations follow where she meets Peter, a young radiologist and her dreary life is turned upside down.

Described as "Kafka meets Cronenberg" (Hollywood Reporter) Tverdovsky's film is a beautifully photographed portrait of Eastern Europe that recalls the recent New Romanian Cinema and features a brave and brilliant central performance from Natalya Pavlenkova.

Features
- High Definition 1080p Presentation
- Optional English Subtitles
- 5.1 DTS-HD MA surround sound
- Trailer

you don't want to miss Candy Apple"
-- Indie Flurry
REALITY IS SKEWED IN AN ECCENTRIC, ECLECTIC
FATHER-SON STORY, AN HOMAGE TO THE
LOWER EAST SIDE OF THE '70s & '80s
CANDY APPLE
Street Date: November 28, 2017
The Blackly Comic Feature Film Debut of Visual Artist Dean Dempsey
in Collaboration with CREEM Magazine Arrives on DVD this November

CANDY APPLE, the first feature-length narrative film from visual artist Dean Dempsey (who also stars) uses Dempsey's biological father and a handful of true stories to weave an eccentric, eclectic and compelling black comedy.  The collaboration with CREEM Magazine, an homage to New York's gritty Lower East Side of the '70s & '80s features a cast of familiar art world and nightlife faces like the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black and Sophia Lamar, and arrives on DVD from IndiePix Films on November 28.
After burning bridges out west, double-amputee punk rocker Terry Trash moves back to New York to room with his adult son Bobby (Dempsey) in a small apartment on the Lower East Side.  Bobby is reluctant, but committed, to helping his ex-junkie father, all the while trying to stay focused on his own creative pursuits.  A fledgling filmmaker, Bobby tries to cast his Trash and the neighborhood characters that inspire him, but constantly fails to finish a project, so he turns to sex work organized by his confidant, Lady (Lamar).  Meanwhile, Trash has all but abandoned landing a job or reigniting his band, and, instead, has befriended local eccentric, Roxy (Neon Music).  With the help of hallucinogens, the two embark on regular adventures through New York and other worlds, when Trash isn't selling drugs.  Ultimately, he overdoses and when Bobby hears of Trash's relapse, his confidence and belief in his father is broken. And as the cast's interrelationships weaken, CANDY APPLE ends where it begins, with a father and son struggling to balance desire with reality but never getting it right.

Finding Joseph I: The HR From Bad Brains Documentary

Shamanistic Frontman HR Of The Bad Brains' Eccentric Life
Revealed In Documentary, " Finding Joseph I"

In Theaters Now and on DVD November 3rd

"By digging through Hudson's triumphant and tumultuous past emerges a story of the life of the man credited with being the driving force of one of the greatest bands of all time."
-OC Weekly

"Explores both the singer's legacy as a dynamic frontman and
as a quixotic figure possibly struggling with mental illness."
-Rolling Stone

"Seeks to provide a deeper understanding of where HR is coming from,
what he's gone through and how he's been perceived."
-Billboard

Paul "HR" Hudson is the voice of punk/hardcore pioneers and Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame nominees Bad Brains, one of the most influential bands to rise out of the 1980's. With Bad Brains, HR harnessed the fiery potential of melding punk rock, reggae, dub, jazz-fusion, metal, and funk into a kaleidoscopic art form centered around his faith in Rasta. HR's uplifting ethos - P.MA. (Positive Mental Attitude) - has cast a light amidst dark defiance, and inspired everyone. From the start, HR shined with charisma and positivity. His vocals were soulful and tribal, hitting us deep in our spiritual core. In performance he gave it all, from stage diving off monitors to his signature back flip. He is a punk prophet, and his legacy resonates today as it was nearly four decades ago. Finding Joseph I, The HR From Bad Brains Documentary chronicles the life, career and struggles of this iconic living legend.

This is a complex picture of a complex man. It shares his explosive artistry as well as his uphill battle with ailing mental health. In this revealing documentary, HR's peers and fellow musicians share their stories and firsthand experiences with the tumultuous singer. HR's own interviews find him digging deep to discuss his life, philosophies, and career. Directed By James Lathos and produced by Small Axe Films with Executive Producer Jay Mohr, Finding Joseph I features never-before- seen archival footage, photography, and exclusive interviews with HR, Earl Hudson (Bad Brains/Brother), Ras Michael, Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi), members of Sublime, Deftones, Fishbone, Cro-Mags, The Wailers, Living Colour and more. Award-winning horror satire K-SHOP starring Ziad Abaza ('Tyrant') and Reece Noi ('Game of Thrones')

BREAKING GLASS OPENS K-SHOP

Cannibal Horror’s North American DVD
& VOD Roll-Out Begins December 12

Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American rights to writer-director Dan Pringle’s cult horror thriller K-SHOP. Breaking Glass acquired rights to the film in August in a deal negotiated between Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff, High Octane Pictures CEO Galen Christy and Devilworks CEO Matteo Rolleri. The film will have a DVD and digital release through iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play, PlayStation, Xbox, and Vudu, as well as through local cable and satellite providers on December 5.

K-SHOP held its world premiere at the Dead by Dawn Horror Film Festival, and its US premiere at the NYC Horror Film Fest where it won Best Special Effects. The film went on to win numerous awards, including the Festival Prize at the London Independent Film Festival, and the Méliès d'argent Award at the Lund Fantastisk Film Festival. K-SHOP also played multiple festivals including MOTELX – Lisbon International Horror Festival, Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival, and the Southside Film Festival.

Described as a “cult classic” and a “twisted tale” (HeyUGuys) where “a little shop of horrors emerges in a kebab takeaway” (Times UK) and “writer/director Dan Pringle has a gift for the gruesome” (Total Film), K-SHOP stars Ziad Abaza (‘Tyrant’, Sand Castle), Reece Noi (‘Game of Thrones’), Darren Morfitt (Dog Soldiers), and Ewen MacIntosh (The Lobster).

After his father is killed in an altercation with drunken thugs, Salah's world is plunged into darkness. Forced into running the family kebab shop alone, Salah struggles to manage the increasingly rowdy nightlife. When a fight with an angry customer goes fatally wrong, he finds himself with a dead body on his hands. Having no faith in the authorities, Salah disposes of the body in the one place he knows best: the kebabs. As the shop's gullible customers devour the new recipe, Salah develops a taste for the kill and seizes the opportunity to turn vigilante, seeking vengeance for the abusive drunkards plaguing the streets.

K-SHOP is the debut feature from British born writer/director Dan Pringle. In 2009, Dan relocated to Bournemouth on the South Coast of the UK to develop White Lantern Film with Producer Adam Merrifield as a vehicle for producing thematically engaging independent feature films. In August 2016, White Lantern announced the development of Pringle’s next feature Britannica, a futuristic thriller exploring themes of immigration and national identity.

“Writer-Director Pringle has created a dazzling mix of horror and satire, sprinkled in a touch of black humor, and combined it all with cannibalism in this well-crafted diatribe on the condescending treatment of immigrants”, said Richard Ross, Co-President of Breaking Glass. “Led by a chilling and commanding performance by Ziad Abaza, K-Shop is a terrifying look at a quiet man pushed way beyond his limit.”

"I'm looking forward to unleashing K-Shop on the US", said writer/director Dan Pringle. "Our film industry exports in the UK are leaning toward big period dramas and loose-mouthed London gangster movies, so I can't wait to share a story rooted in an authentically different area of British society with US audiences."

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and the 200th Anniversary at Escape Velocity 2018

Frankenstein: 200 years later
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's seminal literary masterpiece next year, the Museum is building our own creature with the help of Tom Spina Designs and the graduate costume production program at UNC Chapel Hill. The team is creating an animated replica of the iconic monster with the capability of allowing people to control certain features from their iOS or Android mobile device via the Museum's mobile app.

This project highlights several important aspects that resonate perfectly with Escape Velocity multidisciplinary mission: women in science fiction, literature, science (the creature's biology in this case), robotics (our display animatronics), coding (the Museum’s mobile app and control of the creature’s animatronics), and art (the display object, the creature).

The Box In Black: Johnny Cash's Beloved "Unearthed" Collection Returns As Monolithic Nine-LP Vinyl Box Set On November 3

In the last decade of a career that spanned half a century, Johnny Cash capped off his musical legend with a breathtaking final act, recording a series of raw, stripped-down albums with producer Rick Rubin. Those albums reestablished Cash as a vital artist, while adding a remarkable closing chapter to his incredible body of work.

In November 2003, two months after Cash's passing, Rubin's label American Recordings released Unearthed, an expansive box set of material, most of it previously unreleased, recorded during the artist's graceful twilight years. The set was originally planned to celebrate Cash and Rubin's decade of recording together, and the final mixes had been sent to Cash, but he passed away before receiving them. The recordings, which run the stylistic gamut from stark balladry to punchy rockabilly to heartfelt gospel to classic covers, offer a stunning encapsulation of Cash's wide-ranging musical vision, and provide a fitting epitaph for his iconic career.

To celebrate the Man in Black’s enduring and influential legacy, American Recordings and UMe have reconfigured this monolithic collection for its first-ever vinyl release, spreading Unearthed’s 79 songs over nine high-quality 180-gram vinyl LPs while expanding the original box's distinctive packaging for the long-playing format.

Available November 3, the Unearthed vinyl box features a pair of cloth-bound books housed in an LP-sized black cloth slipcase. One book holds the nine LPs, while the other is a gorgeous 60-page coffee table book that incorporates Sylvie Simmons' extensive liner notes, drawn from five days of interviews at Cash's home in Tennessee, as well as Cash and Rubin's comments on every song on the set, plus a copious selection of photographs from the recording sessions, including some of the last photos ever taken of Cash. Preorder Unearthed now: https://UMe.lnk.to/JohnnyCashUnearthed

Unearthed is divided into five thematic sections. Who's Gonna Cry focuses on acoustic solo recordings, and finds Cash revisiting several classic songs from his legendary catalog. Trouble In Mind is oriented towards electric performances, and includes guest appearances by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Carl Perkins and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as Cash's wife and longtime duet partner June Carter Cash. Redemption Songs is largely acoustic, and features duets with Joe Strummer, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave and Glen Campbell. My Mother's Hymn Book demonstrates Cash's lifelong affinity for gospel music, encompassing 15 time-honored gospel standards. Best of Cash On American offers a memorable 15-song selection of highlights from Cash's first four albums with Rubin.

In its original CD release, Unearthed was acclaimed as an instant classic. Rolling Stone named it as one of the “100 Best Albums of the 2000s” and declared the set "a slice of American culture as monumental, and as enduring, as Mt. Rushmore."

Indeed, in the years since Cash's passing, the artist’s legend has grown and his music has gained in power.  It's hard to think of a more appropriate and impressive sendoff for this one-of-a-kind American original than the massive musical statement that is Unearthed.

New Horror Apparel Company, VIOLENT ABDUCTION, Launches Halloween 2017!

The horror apparel market has been booming lately and over the last couple years has been doing a great job of catering to fans of classic horror films, such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Killer Klowns just to name a few. We have even covered many of them right on this blog. The fans of 80s slasher and gore flicks are definitely covered (no pun intended) when it comes to horror apparel. However, a new company called Violent Abduction, sees a grossly under represented sector of the horror market; Vintage Horror.

"Violent Abduction are extremely excited to reveal a nail-biting new collection of apparel and goods that represents a wide swatch of vintage horror, launching Halloween 2017. VA have created a vividly obtuse and obscure series of limited edition t-shirts and goods based on iconic horror tropes such as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Creature, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, obscure cult films and hit classics, such as Carrie, Psycho, Black Sunday and more. All vintage films before 1980.”

“This isn’t new territory for horror apparel,” says creative director and company founder Brandon Harrod. “But we wanted our first ever dive into this market to be iconic, well designed, quality, vintage and affordable, and they don’t come much more iconic than Universal Monsters, Hammer Films, Karloff, Vincent Price and cult classics.” With a recent resurgence in popularity of well-designed horror apparel, Violent Abduction felt that the timing is perfect for a company of this type and are excited about introducing a whole new generation of fans to the vintage horror.

Violent Abduction Clothing is one of Chicago, IL’s newest clothing labels, with around 100 designs for t-shirts and accessories available by Halloween 2017 for thousands of customers and fans worldwide. Inspired by the true classics and focused on the cult in pop-culture, Violent Abduction has a timeless affinity with vintage horror movies and punk rock music and is hoping to be worn by artists, musicians, businessmen, nerds, jocks and anyone who loves great, classic horror."
