The 200th Anniversary of Frankenstein

Premiering for the 200th Anniversary

FRANKENSTEIN

With detailed and evocative imagery, renowned artist David Plunkert takes readers on a dark journey into the greatest novel in the monster genre, Frankenstein.

Celebrating the bicentennial anniversary of Mary Shelley's original 1818 version, Rockport Publisher's Classics Reimagined series presents this beautiful deluxe edition. The 256-page hardcover book features an 8-page vellum insert detailing the doctor's designs, and a stunning, full bleed, double gatefold image of the monster. Finished with printed endpapers and painted book block, this masterpiece volume is perfect for book lovers and art lovers alike.

The suspense and horror of Dr. Frankenstein reanimating assembled body parts, the monster spying on an unknowing family, and the creature's revenge on his maker take on whole new meaning when accompanied by Plunkert's mystical, layered interpretations.

The Classics Reimagined series is a library of stunning collector's editions of unabridged classic novels illustrated by contemporary artists from around the world. Each artist offers his or her own unique, visual interpretation of the most well-loved, widely read, and avidly collected literature from renowned authors.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (30 August 1797 - 1 February 1851) was an English romantic/gothic novelist and the author of Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. She was married to the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Mary Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin in Somers Town, in London, in 1797. She was the second daughter of famed feminist, philosopher, educator, and writer Mary Wollstonecraft. Her father was the equally famous anarchist philosopher, novelist, journalist, and atheist dissenter William Godwin. Her mother died of puerperal fever ten days after Mary was born.

David Plunkert is the principal and primary illustrator at Spur Design in Baltimore, Maryland. The firm designs posters, covers, logos, brochures and websites for publishers and corporations. His illustrations have appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and LA Weekly, among many others. His steampunkish illustration and collage style give his characters a spooky, surrealistic quality.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and the 200th Anniversary at Escape Velocity 2018

Frankenstein: 200 years later
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's seminal literary masterpiece next year, the Museum is building our own creature with the help of Tom Spina Designs and the graduate costume production program at UNC Chapel Hill. The team is creating an animated replica of the iconic monster with the capability of allowing people to control certain features from their iOS or Android mobile device via the Museum's mobile app.

This project highlights several important aspects that resonate perfectly with Escape Velocity multidisciplinary mission: women in science fiction, literature, science (the creature's biology in this case), robotics (our display animatronics), coding (the Museum’s mobile app and control of the creature’s animatronics), and art (the display object, the creature).

New Horror Apparel Company, VIOLENT ABDUCTION, Launches Halloween 2017!

The horror apparel market has been booming lately and over the last couple years has been doing a great job of catering to fans of classic horror films, such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Killer Klowns just to name a few. We have even covered many of them right on this blog. The fans of 80s slasher and gore flicks are definitely covered (no pun intended) when it comes to horror apparel. However, a new company called Violent Abduction, sees a grossly under represented sector of the horror market; Vintage Horror.

"Violent Abduction are extremely excited to reveal a nail-biting new collection of apparel and goods that represents a wide swatch of vintage horror, launching Halloween 2017. VA have created a vividly obtuse and obscure series of limited edition t-shirts and goods based on iconic horror tropes such as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Creature, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, obscure cult films and hit classics, such as Carrie, Psycho, Black Sunday and more. All vintage films before 1980.”

“This isn’t new territory for horror apparel,” says creative director and company founder Brandon Harrod. “But we wanted our first ever dive into this market to be iconic, well designed, quality, vintage and affordable, and they don’t come much more iconic than Universal Monsters, Hammer Films, Karloff, Vincent Price and cult classics.” With a recent resurgence in popularity of well-designed horror apparel, Violent Abduction felt that the timing is perfect for a company of this type and are excited about introducing a whole new generation of fans to the vintage horror.

Violent Abduction Clothing is one of Chicago, IL’s newest clothing labels, with around 100 designs for t-shirts and accessories available by Halloween 2017 for thousands of customers and fans worldwide. Inspired by the true classics and focused on the cult in pop-culture, Violent Abduction has a timeless affinity with vintage horror movies and punk rock music and is hoping to be worn by artists, musicians, businessmen, nerds, jocks and anyone who loves great, classic horror."
