PROGRAM SYNOPSIS

On September 15, 1969, the boffo third season of the pop culture touchstone, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, premiered to eager viewers. In two short years, through a rapid-fire assault of one-liners, skits, bits and non sequiturs, a gaggle of goofballs and the biggest stars of the day, the series had become water cooler fodder for an entire country. But, little did home audiences know that in Episode #15 (airing December 29), they'd be introduced to one of the generation's greatest and most original comic actors: Lily Tomlin. Tomlin, who'd go on to create such unforgettable characters as Ernestine the snooty phone operator and the precocious, philosophizing five-year-old, Edith Ann, would quickly become a fan favorite and her talents are on full display in ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON.

The '60s gave us "in-crowds," "be-ins" and "love-ins," and starting in 1968, the happening place for free-form comedy was "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," broadcast from beautiful downtown Burbank. Straight man Dan Rowan and wisecracking co-host Dick Martin presided over a cast of comic greats including Tomlin, Goldie Hawn, Judy Carne, Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Gary Owens, Jo Anne Worley and Alan Sues, as they sent up everything from the "Sexy Sixties" and insurance to the generation gap. Across the 26 memorable episodes included on the 7 discs of ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON, home audiences will be treated to such long-running classic sketches as "Sock It to Me," "Cocktail Party," and "The Fickle Finger of Fate," and Sammy Davis Jr. as the judge, as well as amusing salutes to the presidency, hospitals, organized crime, women and show biz. Season Three would also introduce viewers to the inimitable Farkle Family, as well as showcase the improbable almost wedding of Gladys (Buzzi) and Tyrone (Johnson).

Additionally, in THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON, stars continue to shine ever so brightly, as some of the 20th century's biggest headliners and personalities are prominently featured; included are uproarious appearances by Johnny Carson, Debbie Reynolds, Peter Sellers, Flip Wilson, Michael Caine, Bob Hope, Diana Ross, Sonny & Cher, The Monkees, Carol Channing, Buddy Hackett, Sid Caesar, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Debbie Reynolds, Jack Benny, Engelbert Humperdinck, Peter Lawford, Phyllis Diller, Roger Moore, Romy Schneider, Greer Garson, Lorne Greene, Ed McMahon, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Nancy Sinatra, James Garner, Bing Crosby, Tony Curtis, Jim Backus, Andy Williams, Andy Griffith, Carl Reiner, Ringo Starr and many more!

The set also includes two new-to-retail, specially-produced bonus features: an exclusive new interview with Lily Tomlin and the featurette "Still Laugh-In -- A Tribute to George Schlatter".

ELLA FITZGERALD – ELLA AT ZARDI’S – (2 LP PINK & OPAQUE BLUE VINYL)

Following last year’s release of Ella Fitzgerald’s lost live album recorded in 1956 on the eve of her breakthrough, the album will make its vinyl debut as a double LP on pink and opaque blue vinyl with contrasting labels.

Recorded on February 2, 1956 at Zardi's Jazzland in Hollywood, Ella At Zardi's features the entirety of the evening's two-set, 21-song performance, which captures an inspired Fitzgerald singing and swinging in front of an animated, adoring crowd, just days before she’d go on to record the album that would catapult her to stardom. The concert was originally recorded by Norman Granz to celebrate the creation of, and Fitzgerald’s signing to, Verve Records, which Granz founded largely to give Fitzgerald the attention that he felt she wasn't receiving at her then-current label, Decca. Ella At Zardi's was planned as the label’s inaugural release but shelved in favor of the now-classic studio album Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book, which kicked off a best-selling, signature series of Song Book releases. The Zardi’s tapes languished in Verve's vaults for six decades.

Side D: (1) "Little Boy (Little Girl)" (2) "A-Tisket, A-Tisket" (3) "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" (4) "Airmail Special" (5) "I’ve Got A Crush On You"

The Strangers: Prey At Night Soundtrack

VARÈSE SARABANDE RECORDS TO RELEASETHE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT – ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

Featuring Original Music by Adrian Johnston
Plus Songs By Kim Wilde, Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply, and Mental As Anything

Varèse Sarabande will release THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on March 23 and on CD April 13, 2018. The album features original music composed by Adrian Johnston (BECOMING JANE, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED).

THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT is a reboot of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 cult classic The Strangers.  The movie stars Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson and Bailee Madison.  A road trip to visit relatives takes a dangerous turn when a family arrives at a secluded mobile home park that's mysteriously deserted -- until three masked psychopaths show up.

“I had an idea that once we reach Gatlin Lake, just as the strangers are tuning into radio pop from yesteryear, so too should the scoring sensibilities get occasionally dialed across the decades,” said composer Johnston. “I also wanted to treat it as much as possible as a live event, but also incorporating certain ‘musique concrete’ techniques, reverse tape, loops, cut ups etc.”

Adrian Johnston’s film career began after he became known for live multi-instrumental performances of his new scores for classic silent movies across Europe and USA. His first feature commission was JUDE in 1996. Other film credits include BECOMING JANE and KINKY BOOTS.

Johnston thought out of the box in recording the music for THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT.  “The recording sessions took place at night in an incredibly atmospheric (deconsecrated) chapel, centuries old,” he described.  “I projected the film onto a 30-foot high paper screen and improvised to picture, mixing acoustic instruments, vintage synths and organs. There were no nearby neighbors to disturb so I was able to get the entire building thrumming with the cacophony.”

In addition to Johnston’s score, the soundtrack features classic tracks by Kim Wilde, Bonnie Tyler, and Air Supply.

Chicago Center for The Print Presents "Movie Poster Memories" March 9 - April 15, 2018

Opening Reception Friday, March 9th 6-9PM

We present "Movie Poster Memories" in collaboration with Ray Ruggeri a local expert and film lover.

We are proud to present "Movie Posters Memories" in collaboration with Ray Ruggeri a local expert in the field of original movie posters and life long film lover. Ruggeri has collected original movie posters for 40 years & has a background in art history. The exhibition and sale featuring hundreds of original and vintage movie posters from around the world and spanning several decades. This is our 4th exhibition together.

"This exhibition features original movie posters, both foreign and domestic, highlighting many genres and spanning several decades. If Hollywood is the stuff which dreams are made of, then movie posters are their tangible counterparts," says Ruggeri.

These posters were created by unsung studio artists to capture a film's essence at a glance, to reflect the time, climate and society from which they sprang. Many of these memorable designs have remained long after their celluloid counterparts have faded. The most successful posters created the thrills, chills and excitement just as well as the films themselves.

Posters including movie posters were designed to be glued up in public places and thus destroyed by the weather or covered over by other posters. Today, however, they are considered true works of art. They reflect the changes in the visual arts. They belong to art history and thus are sought out by art lovers, poster collectors all over the world. Included in this show is a sampling of limited edition art prints created by movie poster artists of today for companies like Mondo.

Exhibition & sale runs through April 15th.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

The Wonder Years debuted in 1988 following ABC's broadcast of Super Bowl XXII, and, for six memorable seasons, the series affectionately captured the angst of growing up in suburban middle-class America in the late '60s, as seen through the life and times of Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage). It was unlike anything on television and audiences eagerly followed his evolution as a typical awkward teenager who remembered every moment of his transition from childhood with excruciating detail and remarkable hindsight. From his first kiss with Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar) to his friendship with Paul Pfeiffer (Josh Saviano) and the ups and downs of the Arnold family, fans shared in laughter, love, and loss, but above all, wonder.

From 1988 to 1993, The Wonder Years was one of the most popular shows on TV, achieving a spot in the Nielsen Top 30 for four of its six seasons. And the critical accolades and awards would follow: after only a scant six episodes, the show captured an Emmy® for "Best Comedy Series;" and, at the age of 13, Fred Savage would become the youngest actor ever nominated as "Outstanding Lead Actor for a Comedy Series." The series would also go on to win 24 awards (and be nominated for 70 more), including multiple Emmy® Awards, a Golden Globe® and, in 1989, a Peabody® Award for pushing the boundaries of the sitcom format and using new modes of storytelling.

March into spring with 11 new releases from Arrow!

Get the new month started with Richard Kelly's early 2000's classic, Donnie Darko, available on both
Blu-ray and DVD from Arrow Video. This story of a troubled teenager with vision of a deranged rabbit manipulating him into a series of crimes features an all star cast and quickly became a cult icon. When the world comes to and end you can breathe a sigh of relief because you have Donnie to look forward to.
Shifting gears from classic American and into Italian giallo, Arrow Video serves up another dish from the maestro Dario Argento with The Cat O' Nine Tales available on limited edition Blu-ray +
DVD combo pack. After reinventing the giallo with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage in 1970, Argento proved be was no fluke a year later with this followup about a newspaper reporter and retired blind journalist that work together to solve a series of murders.

Fans of George Romero will be pleased to get their hands on some of the Zombie King's non-dead
titles with individual Blu-ray releases of There's Always Vanilla,
Season of the Witch and The Crazies.
While these three films don't have quite the same notoriety as Romero's series of dead films, they are important pieces of work that highlight the versatility he had as a director. And yes, they still take place in the Pittsburgh area.

Clowns are creepy all on their own, but send clowns from outer space with a thirst for blood and
you've got nightmare fuel. Well, the Chiodo Brothers are more than happy to gas up your tiny car with Killer Klowns From Outer Space, coming to Blu-ray from Arrow Video. This 80's cult favorite has been both frightful and delightful for fans for 30 years. If you think death by cotton candy cocoon is bad wait until you find out that in space no one can eat ice cream!

Arrow Academy will also make their presence felt in March with two new releases of their own. First up is
Robert Altman's Images. This story of affairs, paranoia and hallucinations stars Susannah York
and was based off a novel, "In Search of Unicorns," that she wrote. The second and final release from Arrow Academy will be Sacha Guitry: Four Films 1936-1938 Limited Edition [Blu-ray + DVD]. This set, as the titles suggests, contains four films from the French filmmaker, playwright and actor.

For the film fan looking to up their collection with something other than movies, Arrow has you
covered there as well. Coming to vinyl for the first time will be Erik the Conqueror (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) from composer Roberto Nicolosi. The rousing score will be released on limited, translucent yellow, double-vinyl presented on 180 gram wax. Also making the leap to vinyl will be Stelvio
Cipriani's Death Walks On High Heels (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). An underrated composer, Cipriani's giallo score combines jarring, staccato suspense themes with luxurious lounge jazz arrangements.

And finally bringing the month to the close is The Blair Witch Project from filmmaker/author Russell Gomm. This new book takes a look at the phenomena of The Blair Witch Project through the eyes of a fan that was captivated by the film's unusual marketing campaign. Gomm uncovers the production history of the film and follows it up through the smashing success that it became.
