THE FARTHEST to Air on PBS NEXT Wed. August 23rd

THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE Will Premiere August 23 on PBS

In Celebration of 40th Anniversary of the Voyager Launch

PBS announced today that THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE, a two-hour special about NASA’s historic Voyager mission to explore our solar system and beyond, will premiere nationally on August 23 at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS stations, in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the first Voyager launch. The documentary was an official selection in the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival as part of the festival’s Viewpoints program. (Watch the trailer here.)

With participation from more than 20 of the original and current mission scientists, engineers and team members, THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE tells captivating tales of one of humanity’s greatest achievements in exploration. From supermarket aluminum foil added at the last minute to protect the craft from radiation; to the near disasters at launch; to the emergency maneuvers to fix a crucial frozen instrument platform, viewers get a sense of how difficult—and rewarding—space exploration can be.

Featuring a soundtrack of evocative period music including songs from Pink Floyd, stunning cinematography, vivid CGI animations of Voyager traversing the solar system, and original groundbreaking photographs taken by the twin spacecraft, the film tells the story of one of humanity’s most ambitious scientific endeavors. Voyager revolutionized planetary science, resolved key questions about the outer planets and raised intriguing new ones about the evolution of our solar system. Originally approved to travel only to Saturn and Jupiter, the spacecraft used gravity-assisted slingshot trajectories to take advantage of a once-in-176-year planetary alignment to extend their missions, with Voyager 2 also extending its mission to visit Uranus and Neptune.

After completing its mission to Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 turned its camera inward and, at the insistence of the eloquent and insightful astronomer Carl Sagan, took one of the most famous images of Earth ever captured. As described by Sagan in the film, the image showed Earth as a pale blue dot on which “everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives …on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

The spacecraft, equipped with a fraction of the computing power of a modern cell phone, sent back unprecedented images and data from all four outer planets and many of their moons. As they continue their journey into interstellar space, they carry with them a literal record of our existence that may outlive us all. Sagan was one of the masterminds behind perhaps Voyager’s most iconic feature, The Golden Record, which carries greetings, music and images from Earth to intelligent beings they may one day encounter. THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE reveals how this famous record was created and how it presents humanity to any creatures that may find it.

“We’re living in an exciting time for space exploration, with new Earth-like exoplanets being discovered, manned missions to Mars on the horizon, and the search for extraterrestrial life being taken ever more seriously,” says executive producer Sean B. Carroll of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios. “And even though it launched 40 years ago, Voyager laid the foundation for so much of what we know about the outer planets and beyond. It’s an incredible scientific achievement, but also inspires us to reflect on our place in the universe and to imagine the implications of finding life on other worlds.”

“The men and women who gave birth to the Voyager mission are an extraordinary group of people whose passion and sense of curiosity are as eternal as the Voyager journey itself,” says producer John Murray of Crossing The Line Films. “We are incredibly grateful to them for sharing their stories with us and for bringing to life what it was like to create a scientific mission of literally cosmic proportions. This story is more than 40 years in the making, and there have been—and continue to be—so many firsts that Voyager remains as relevant now as it was when it was launched. The spacecraft are still inspiring people, still forging new frontiers of discovery and still sending back data that is changing our understanding of our solar system and beyond.”

Four decades after they left Earth, Voyager 1 has traveled more than 12 billion miles and Voyager 2 more than 10 billion. Both nuclear-powered spacecraft continue to send back data. In 2012, Voyager 1, which is traveling at more than 320 million miles per year, became the first human-made object to enter interstellar space—leaving our solar system behind and ushering humanity into the interstellar age.

Leading up to the broadcast in August, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios will develop a series of public screenings and discussions featuring scientists and engineers who appear in the film and who worked on the Voyager mission. Information on the location and dates of screening events will be available later this spring at pbs.org/farthest.  The events will coincide with a rich summer of astronomical events and news: for the first time in nearly 40 years, a complete solar eclipse will be visible across the continental United States, to be chronicled in NOVA “Eclipse Over America” on August 21; and after a nearly 20-year mission exploring Saturn and its moons, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft will end its mission by plunging into Saturn’s atmosphere, burning up like a meteor. NOVA will explore this mission in “Death Dive to Saturn” on September 13.

“As America turns its attention to the stars and sky this summer, THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE will be a wonderful way to revisit how this incredible journey began, and to celebrate the men and women whose extraordinary vision will take us to the furthest reaches of the universe,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “We hope it will encourage the next generation of scientists to continue to push the boundaries of what seems possible.”

THE FARTHEST – VOYAGER IN SPACE is a Crossing The Line film presented by HHMI Tangled Bank Studios in association with the Irish Film Board, ZDF, ARTE and the BBC. The film is written and directed by Emer Reynolds and produced by John Murray and Clare Stronge. Executive producers are John Rubin, Sean B. Carroll and Dennis Liu (HHMI Tangled Bank Studios) and Keith Potter (Irish Film Board). Executive in Charge for PBS is Bill Gardner.

Continue your space exploration with additional new PBS specials that offer an in-depth look at the solar system and beyond! Coming up on August 21, NOVA “Eclipse Over America” invites you to observe a total solar eclipse traversing the US mainland for the first time in more than a generation. Two more NOVA specials, “Death Dive to Saturn” on September 13 and “Black Holes” (w.t.) date TBD, explore the Cassini space probe’s mission to Saturn and the frontiers of black hole research, respectively. In November, BEYOND A YEAR IN SPACE chronicles Scott Kelly’s return home after a year in space and provides a glimpse of a new generation of astronauts training for mankind’s greatest leap yet: the journey to Mars. PBS KIDS’ hit space-themed series READY JET GO! takes young viewers on far-flung learning adventures through astronomy, technology, scientific exploration, innovation and invention. PBS Digital Studios’ SPACE TIME explores the outer reaches of space, the craziness of astrophysics, the possibilities of sci-fi and anything else imaginable beyond planet Earth.

New immersive exhibition examines the genre’s most memorable monsters

SEATTLE – The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) announced the opening of a new exhibition, Scared to Death: The Thrill of Horror Film. Organized by MoPOP, this original exhibit takes an in-depth look at more than a century of horror cinema. From blood-thirsty vampires and unrelenting zombies to fiendish slashers, this immersive experience presents the broad range of iconic horror villains and the stories over the generations that have brought them to life.
Scared to Death: The Thrill of Horror Film opens at MoPOP on September 30, 2017.

In addition to releasing some of our favorite lesser known slashers, gore films, B-movies and more, Scream Facory hosted a takeover of the Shout Factory TV channle on Roku earlier this year and provided some EXCELLENT streaming entertainment. As a thank you, we here at MOOSTERBLOG would like to turn anyone that is not familiar with SCREAM FACTORY onto some of their best, upcoming new releases. We hope you love them as much as we do.

MISERY: OUT ON BLU-RAY 11/28/17

Novelist Paul Sheldon doesn't remember the blinding blizzard that sent his car spinning off the road. He doesn't remember being nursed back from unconsciousness. But he will never forget Annie Wilkes.

James Caan and Academy Award® winner* Kathy Bates star in the bone-shattering thriller Misery, adapted from the novel by Stephen King. As Paul (Caan) recuperates from his injuries in the secluded cabin of his benefactor Annie (Bates), he begins to discover that beneath the seemingly kind and naive exterior of his self-described "number one fan" lurks a mind that is cunning, unhinged, and bent on keeping her favorite writer as her personal prisoner for the rest of his "cock-a-doodie" life ... and Sheldon must engage his savior-turned-captor in a battle of wills that will push them both to the brink.

Adapted by two-time Oscar®-winning** screenwriter William Goldman and directed by Rob Reiner (Stand By Me, The Princess Bride), Misery is considered by critics and fans (number ones and others) to be among the greatest horror-thrillers of all-time. Revisit this classic tonight with your friends ... after all, Misery loves company.

*1990: Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Misery

**1969: Writing, Screenplay Based On Material from Another Medium, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; 1976, Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Material Not Previously Published or Produced, All The President's Men

MST3K: VOL. XXXIX: OUT 11/21/17

And in the end, the laughs you take are equal to the jokes they make. Contained within is the almost certainly, probably definitely, maybe unquestionably final collection of never-before-released episodes of our favorite Cowtown puppet show, Mystery Science Theater 3000. The slings and arrows of outrageous licenses have resulted in only three episodes, so we have included a disc featuring host segments of all the remaining unreleased ones. It's fitting that this volume includes Diabolik, as it was the final episode of the series. But final has a way of not being final, and one need only turn to Netflix to appreciate that. So take one plausibly last ride with our heroes on the Satellite of Love, and keep circulating the tapes!

Titles Include:

Girls Town

The Amazing Transparent Man

Diabolik

Satellite Dishes

Plus, the first 1,500 orders from ShoutFactory.com will receive an exclusive bonus disc, which will contain:

ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE: OUT 11/14/17

Directed by cult filmmaker Bert I. Gordon (Empire of the Ants, The Amazing Colossal Man), the film features an all-star cult movie cast including John Agar (Nightbreed, The Mole People, The Brain from Planet Arous), John Hoyt (When Worlds Collide) and Susan Gordon (Picture Mommy Dead).

My Bloody Valentine from Waxwork Records

Waxwork Records is proud to announce the new double LP soundtrack release of MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981). Praised by director Quentin Tarantino as his favorite slasher movie of all time, MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981) tells the story of a small mining town and it’s residents that fall victim to a vengeful, homicidal maniac on Valentine’s Day. The film has garnered a cult following and has also sparked a major-studio remake in 2009.

The foreboding score by Paul Zaza is a mix of both minimal synth and orchestral compositions intertwined with bluegrass and country soundtrack cues. New Book Explores the Influential Southern California Punk Rock Scene of the 1970s and ’80s Through Interviews with the Women Who Lived It

The punk rock scene of the 1970s and ’80s in Southern California is widely acknowledged as one of the most vibrant and creative periods in rock and roll. Over the years, many books have come out exploring this explosive time in music and culture, but none have exclusively focused on the vitality and influence of the women who played such a crucial role in this incredibly dynamic movement.

Stacy Russo has created a unique book about the punk rock era, focusing on the women who were such a huge part of it. We Were Going to Change the World: Interviews with Women From the 1970s & 1980s Southern California Punk Rock Scene (Santa Monica Press/August 21, 2017) captures the stories of women who were active in the punk rock scene in Southern California during this historic time, adding an important voice to the cultural and musical record.
Through exclusive interviews with musicians, journalists, photographers, and fans, Russo captures the essence of why these women were drawn to punk rock, what they witnessed, and how their involvement in this empowering scene ended up influencing the rest of their lives.

“As a librarian and college professor, I have always been interested in research projects I could do with my students,” Russo explains. “I came up with the idea of interviewing women like me, now in our middle or later years, who grew up in the punk rock scene in Southern California. How did punk rock influence the rest of their lives? What attracted them to punk rock, and how did they get involved? And, most importantly, what was it like being a woman in this music scene?”

The major influential musicians and performers of the era that Russo interviewed include:

Exene Cervenka
Alice Bag
Kira
Phranc
Johanna Went
Teresa Covarrubias
Jennifer Precious Finch

Russo also interviews such highly regarded journalists, DJs, and photographers as:

Ann Summa
Jenny Lens
Kristine McKenna
Pleasant Gehman
Stella
In addition, Russo includes interviews with the fans and scenesters who added so much color and energy to the music scene.

“This book was never meant to be a who’s who of punk rock,” Russo says. “I did not want to include only well-known women and performers. It was important to include women who created fanzines and art, and those who participated solely by going to shows and supporting the bands.”

We Were Going to Change the World is an important oral history of the crucial contributions women injected into the Southern California punk rock scene of the 1970s and ’80s. Empowering, touching, and informative, Russo’s collection of interviews adds a whole new dimension to the literature of both punk rock and women’s studies.

Celebrate Louis Armstrong's 116th Birthday With New Digital Collection, "The Complete Decca Singles 1935-1946"

HAPPY 116TH BIRTHDAY, POPS!

LOUIS ARMSTRONG’S THE COMPLETE DECCA SINGLES 1935-1946
RELEASED DIGITALLY TODAY ON HIS BIRTHDAY

MANY SONGS MAKING THEIR DIGITAL DEBUT

ANNUAL SATCHMO SUMMERFEST KICKS OFF TODAY IN NEW ORLEANS

In celebration of the late, great Louis Armstrong’s 116th birthday today, Verve Records/UMe have released the digital collection, The Complete Decca Singles 1935-1946, bringing together every single and B-side Pops released during his first decade on Decca Records. Totaling 136 tracks – with many available digitally for the first time – the comprehensive collection is now on all digital retailers and streaming services just as the annual music extravaganza Satchmo SummerFest gets underway in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter for three days and nights of contemporary and traditional jazz in honor of the legendary trumpet player and singer. The Complete Decca Singles 1935-1946 is available here: https://UMe.lnk.to/LouisCompleteDecca

A prequel to The Complete Decca Singles 1949-1958 issued at the end of 2016, the new collection is comprised of six digital volumes with the tracks (A-side/B-side) in chronological order by original release date. Representing an overview of Armstrong’s highly prolific period recording for Decca Records, The Complete Decca Singles illuminates a time when Satchmo was developing a clear vocal and scatting style and and his trumpet playing was second to none. Of note, three-quarters of this collection has been properly pitch-corrected for the first time ever, a cause for joy for practicing trumpet players (and singers) all over the world.

Upon signing to the recently formed U.S. Decca label in 1935, Armstrong quickly scored a hit with “I’m in the Mood for Love” and it’s that song that appropriately begins the sprawling set. Many of his other hits are represented throughout including, “When The Saints Go Marching In,” “Public Melody Number One,” “Swing That Music,” and “Struttin’ With Some Barbecue,” as well as several notable collaborations like Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald’s first-ever duets, “You Won't Be Satisfied (Until You Break My Heart)” and “The Frim Fram Sauce,” and his duet with Bing Crosby, “Pennies From Heaven,” the title track of the 1936 film they starred in together.

During this fertile decade, Armstrong recorded in a wide variety of settings, including big bands, small ensembles and pairings with the likes of Jimmy Dorsey and the Mills Brothers, and the material here encapsulates this creative wanderlust and evolution. The songs range from early jazz, big band swing, ragtime and Dixieland, to the novelty Polynesian sounds of the day and even spoken word. Regardless of genre, it’s Armstrong’s remarkable trumpet playing and trademark gravelly tenor that are always front and center, making these songs unmistakably the work of the one and only, Louis Armstrong.

-- Horror Film News
Artsploitation has unwrapped a gift for all the bad boys and girls with the upcoming limited release of the Australian horror film Red Christmas.  Veteran television director and actor Craig Anderson makes his feature debut with Red Christmas, combining the banal horror of family gatherings with the issues of abortion, feminism, ethics, religion and privacy, with a blood-splattered twist on what happens when secrets refuse to stay dead.

Genre icon Dee Wallace (The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, E.T., Cujo, Critters) stars as the stressed-out mother of a squabbling family, gathered together in a remote Outback estate on Christmas Eve.  Their petty dramas threaten to blacken the holiday until a mysterious and deformed stranger appears at the door seeking bloody vengeance.  Red Christmas will open in Los Angeles August 25th for a weeklong run at the Laemmle Music Hall, and expand to screens in San Francisco, Denver, Dallas and more over the coming weeks.

Dee Wallace headlines as Diane, a matriarch presiding over the gathering of her squabbling grown children on Christmas Day.  Tensions give way to terror when a deformed stranger appears at the door with vengeance on his mind.  Diane must protect her family as limbs are severed and secrets are brought into the light.

THE MONSTER PROJECT Coming to Select Theaters and VOD/Digital HD August 18th

A film by Victor Mathieu
In a chilling and inventive take on the classic monster movie genre, THE MONSTER PROJECT follows a group of aspiring horror filmmakers, eager to raise their YouTube subscriber count, who post an online casting call for “real life” monsters to interview for their documentary. They find three participants and choose to film them sharing their haunted experiences in a mansion in the woods on the night of a lunar eclipse. The production suddenly turns into a nightmare when the participants transform into a real vampire, demon, and skinwalker (a type of harmful witch, according to Navajo legends, that can transform into any animal with the intent of harming people), forcing the unsuspecting crew to fight for their lives.

The film was directed by Victor Mathieu and written by Mathieu, Shariya Lynn, and Corbin Billings. Toby Hemingway ("BLACK SWAN", "IN TIME"), Justin Bruening ("GOOD BEHAVIOR", "GREY'S ANATOMY", "RINGER"), and Yvonne Zima ("IRON MAN 3", "NICE GUYS") provide strong performances with Jamal Quezaire and Murielle Zuker rounding out the cast.
THE MONSTER PROJECT is distributed by Epic Pictures.

Established in 2007 by Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson, Epic Pictures Group has grown to become one of the most creative and dynamic independent studios, focusing on filmmakers’ vision driven projects, shaping them from script to launch via its domestic distribution division Epic Pictures Releasing. Throughout the past 10 years, Epic produced many genre cult hits including the 2015 Sundance premieres “ENTERTAINMENT” and “TURBO KID” and all-star horror anthology “TALES OF HALLOWEEN”. More recently Epic produced the psychological horror “THE LODGERS,” sci-fi thriller “RADIUS,” action horror “REDCON-1,” and the adventure thriller “THE MAN WHO KILLED HITLER AND THEN THE BIGFOOT” starring Sam Elliott.
