RECAP: COMEDY CENTRAL ROAST OF GLEN DANZIG

roast finished

H
OLLYWOOD, Calif. – It was a star-studded affair in          Los Angeles last night when dozens of punk and metal            legends joined to roast former Misfits howler Glenn                    Danzig. The roast master and equally muscular frontman of Black Flag fame, Henry Rollins, led the no-holds-barred dissing match.
The Hard Times was reporting live from the event, and has compiled our favorite wise-cracks of the night by topic (of which there were many).
On his appearance:
“This isn’t a roast, Glenn, this is an intervention,” Rollins said. “You’ve been abusing fishnet stockings for over 30 years and you still don’t know that they aren’t supposed to go on your arms.”
“Glenn, you look like an aunt that would rather just hang out with her cats,” Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle said.
“Glenn, you ain’t no goddamned son-of-a-bitch, that’s true. You’re her ugliest daughter. You look like Morticia Adams ate Uncle Fester,” Greg Gaffin of Bad Religion said.
“Danzig, who the fuck is Danzig? I thought that guy in the chair was Tommy Wiseau,” Jeffrey Ross said.
On his song writing skills:
“Glenn wants your skull so he can stand on top of it to reach the high shelf where his mom hid the good cereal,” H.R. of Bad Brains said.
“‘We Are 138′ is my favorite Misfits song because it’s the same number of people who’ve actually read your awful comic books,” Michael Graves, also once a singer of the Misfits, said.
On his business practices:
“Glenn, the only Hybrid Moment you have is when you drive your Prius to the mall to buy your own band’s t-shirt at JCPenney,” Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat and Fugazi said.
“Punk’s not dead, it’s discounted – but only today if you enter the code GLENNneedsMONEY on Amazon.com,” Keith Morris of Circle Jerks and Black Flag said.
“Everyone, reach under your chair, there’s a pair of Misfits bunny slippers to match with a Crimson Ghost waffle maker you can buy at the Target across the street,” Fat Mike of NOFX said.
On his obsession with the Occult:
“I F#@$ING hate you,” Dave Grohl, who came onstage dressed as Satan himself, said. “Stop writing songs about me. I’m not your ex-girlfriend.”
“Also, Greg Geraldo is next to me, and he says Samhain was garbage,” he added.
Still, some things were off limits:
“No cat litter jokes, please,” former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra said, referencing a famous photograph of Danzig leaving a shopping center with an unbagged box of Fresh Step litter. “Everyone know’s that Glenn has wolf’s blood on his arm, but he also has a problem with cat pee on his mattress.”
“You probably named your cat Danzig, too, you awful idiot,” he added.
As is tradition, Danzig was given his turn to respond to the other hardcore legends on the dais:
“Thank you, Henry [Rollins], my old friend. A lot of people don’t know this, but I based the fiend skull off of Henry’s malnourished face. You’ve been burning too much body fat fighting your fans in hip book shops,” Danzig said.
“Doyle, you don’t want to come up here and say something mean? Doyle doesn’t do anything if he can’t do it with his balled fist. The man knocks himself unconscious every time he tries to zip up his pants,” Danzig said.
“Michael [Graves], good to see you found another way to make money off me. Jerry Only couldn’t be here tonight, but he’s still finding a way to get paid for it, anyway,” Danzig said.
“Ian [Mackaye], I’m a huge fan of you and Dave Grohl’s new show on HBO where you ask each other the same questions for 20 years in between hours of autofellatio,” Danzig said.
“Well, that’s it for me. See you all in court,” Danzig concluded.
The night ended early when, moments after leaving the stage, Danzig was knocked unconscious by a security guard he tried to fight for no reason.

Boston Mayor Proclaims 4/9 Riot Grrrl Day In Kathleen Hanna’s Honor (via Stereogum)

taken from Stereogum

By Gabriela Tully Claymore / April 8, 2015
Mayor Marty Walsh of Boston has proclaimed 4/9 “Riot Grrrl Day” in honor of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and the Julie Ruin front-woman Kathleen Hanna. Hanna will be performing and lecturing at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston’s theater district tomorrow, and she will be introduced by Joyce Linehan, who is Mayor Walsh’s chief of policy and has known Hanna for decades. Linehan told Boston Magazine that Hanna used to stay at her house when Bikini Kill was on tour. In the article, it’s insinuated that Linehan was the catalyst behind this proclamation, which was adapted from Hanna’s Riot Grrrl Manifesto:
The riot grrrl philosophy has never felt more relevant, with misogyny still rampant in many cultural spaces… Riot grrrls redefine the language used against them and continue to fight the newest incarnations of patriarchy. In doing so, they ironically confirm one ex-congressman’s accidental wisdom: ‘the female body has ways to try to shut that down.’ It sure does: women’s voices telling their stories can shut that down.

What are our friends up to?

We have friends all over and they do amazing shit too! Check out these peeps who are totally down with the Mooster Records fam!

Our bud Travis in South Carolina has an amazing label! ECCENTRIC POP RECORDS

Their latest release was a flashback for me. Sweet Baby "It's A Girl" reissue LP

Description
Pre-Order! Records will ship on or before April 7th!
This is a one-time pressing on pink vinyl, limited to 500 copies!
Formed in Berkeley, California in 1986, Sweet Baby (and their contemporaries Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, the Mr. T Experience, etc) played a seminal role in the earliest days of the Gilman Street punk scene. Many credit Sweet Baby with inventing an entirely new genre of music – one which melds the harmonic pop sensibilities of the Beatles and the Everly Brothers with the frenetic four-on-the-floor song structures of the Ramones and the Buzzcocks. It's a genre that came to be called “pop punk,” and it’s a genre that Sweet Baby defined and perfected years before anyone else.
Out of print on vinyl for over twenty years, Sweet Baby’s “It’s A Girl” LP has attained a cult-like following and has influenced virtually every pop-leaning punk band of the last two decades. Eccentric Pop Records is beyond stoked to (finally!) offer this limited edition reissue pressing – featuring completely remastered audio and pressed on pink vinyl, this album has never looked or sounded better!!!

I STOLE THAT RIGHT FROM THEIR PAGE.

Down in Nashville, the Patton brothers (formerly of The Loblaws) are cooking up something real nice for the beginning of baseball season. Their baseball rock band Vista Blue just posted its first tunes and have a cassette coming this summer! Check it here:

Beat the Champ is about professional wrestling, which was an avenue of escape for me when I was a kid. Wrestling was low-budget working class entertainment back then, strictly UHF material. It was cheap theater. You had to bring your imagination to the proceedings and you got paid back double. I wrote these songs to re-immerse myself in the blood and fire of the visions that spoke to me as a child, and to see what more there might be in them now that I'm grown.

STILETTOBOMB Stiletto Bomb is a punk rock band from Western Mass. featuring male/female vocal dynamics, shredding guitars, pounding drums and fast paced, melodic songs with catchy hooks and sing-a-long choruses. The band formed in January 2014, originally as J Prozac and The Stilettos,

STAY TUNES FOR A STILETTO BOMB RELEASE FROM MOOSTER IN THE COMING MONTHS!

The Scharpling & Wurster Box set

This 16 disc set released by The Número Group is unbelievable. The Número Group has really out done themselves with this one.

Living in Chicago it is a little embarrassing to say, but this is my first purchase from Número. (My phone keeps autocorrecting with the accent).

Being a fan of The Best Show(on WFMU) since late 2007 when my buddy Dan introduced it to me on a tour of the US, I had to snatch up this all encompassing box set.

16 discs spanning a 13 year radio career of Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster calls into the subversive radio show/podcast, nothing is left to the imagination.

A 108 page book with essays from Patton Oswalt, Julie Klausner, AP Mike! And more tell their own personal stories about The Best Show.

Also included is a USB drive disguised as a cassette tape containing all of the 19 discs and some bonus material. A little envelope with tons of ephemera like temp tats, postcards and my favorite, a map of the fictional town of Newbridge, New Jersey by one of my fave illustrators Scott Teplin. It's so glorious!

The final piece of the puzzle is an actual piece of the smashed phone that Jon Wurster used to make calls in to The Best Show. An actual piece of history. I'm blown away!

As an often ridiculed fan of one of the most underappreciated comedic talents in the game, I am very pleased with the $100 price tag that goes along with this box set. Having the USB drive will probably keep me from actually taking out the CDs but it's all the same. If you dig this and feel like dropping the Bickies, pick one up at numerogroup.com and PLEASE FOR GODS SAKE, LISTEN TO THE BEST SHOW!!! Every Tueaday night at thebestshow.net or on iTunes. The archives are still up for the past 13 years at WFMU.org too

Cheers!
