NO FUTURE: Punk, Politics and British Youth Culture, 1976-1984

No FuturePunk, Politics and British Youth Culture, 1976-1984By Matthew WorleyPub Date October 2017 | Paperback| 480 pp |

“Punk inspired both political engagement and cynicism. It also
encouraged, alongside the industrial culture that emerged
simultaneously,the explorationofsexual,psychologicaland
delinquentextremes;anything to escape the banality of late
twentieth-century living. To understand punk’s politics,
therefore, is not to find philosophical clarity or the basis of a
movement. Rather, the politics of punk resided in itsrefusal and
its practice: a recognition that‘blind acceptance is a sign of stupid
fools who stand in line’”

No Feelings. No Fun. No Future. The years 1976–84 saw punk emerge and evolve as a fashion, a musical form, an attitude and an aesthetic. Against a backdrop of social fragmentation, violence, high unemployment and socio-economic change, punk rejuvenated and re-energized British youth culture, inserting marginal voices and political ideas into pop. Fanzines and independent labels flourished; an emphasis on doing it yourself enabled provincial scenes to form beyond London's media glare. This was the period of Rock Against Racism and benefit gigs for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the striking miners.

Matthew Worley charts the full spectrum of punk's cultural development from the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks and Slits through the post-punk of Joy Division, the industrial culture of Throbbing Gristle and onto the 1980s diaspora of anarcho-punk, Oi! and goth and recaptures punk's anarchic force as a medium through which the frustrated and the disaffected could reject, revolt and re-invent

About the Author
Matthew Worley is a Professor of Modern History at the University of Reading. He has written extensively on British politics in the interwar period, and more recently on the relationship between youth culture and politics in the 1970s and 1980s. Articles on punk-related themes have been published in History Workshop Journal, Twentieth Century British History, and Contemporary British History. Recent works include Oswald Mosley and the New Party (2010) and, as a co-founder of the Subcultures Network, contributions to books such as Fight Back: Punk, Politics and Resistance (2015) and Youth Culture, Popular Music and the End of 'Consensus'

GIVEAWAY COMING SOON: Kafkaesque 80s throwback horror, Cronenberg meets Orwell — WEAPONIZED, publishing Oct 31

This Halloween Inkshares is publishing Zac Thompson's dystopian horror novel WEAPONIZED, winner of the 2016 CryptTV horror fiction contest. For fans of It Follows, WEAPONIZED is a Kafkaesque eighties throwback horror that subverts the slasher genre with a refreshing take on body horror, and the twisted, violent, burgeoning sexuality that underpins the genre. WEAPONIZED is Thompson's debut novel.

Thompson is a writer from Prince Edward Island. He is best known for his critically acclaimed comic book series The Dregs. His work has also appeared in IGN, The Huffington Post, and VICE.

"A horror genre level-up akin to the twisted classics of Clive Barker with the social relevance of It Follows. Zac Thompson crafts an uncomfortably dystopian world with a sense of dread that mounts with each page. Engaging, twisted and drenched in gore, this is a perfectly crafted nightmare." —Kate Krantz, CryptTV

"Dystopia done right. Cronenberg meets Orwell in this terrifying vision of the future." —Mark Alan Miller, writer of Hellraiser, Next Testament, and The Steam Man

"Zac Thompson brings body horror to The River's Edge where it rightfully belongs. If you've ever fathomed Cronenberg updating The Scarlet Letter, or have dreamed of Greg Araki rebooting Street Trash, you still won't be prepared for Weaponized." —Clay McLeod Chapman, author of Rest Area

PATSY CLINE’S INIMITABLE LIFE AND LEGACY EXAMINED IN NEW DVD, WHEN PATSY CLINE WAS … CRAZY

PATSY CLINE’S INIMITABLE LIFE AND LEGACY EXAMINED IN NEW DVD, WHEN PATSY CLINE WAS … CRAZY, FEATURING ACCLAIMED AMERICAN MASTERS DOCUMENTARY AND EXCLUSIVE BONUS MATERIAL

NARRATED BY ROSANNE CASH, DOC FEATURES EXCLUSIVE ARCHIVAL MATERIAL, RARE PERFORMANCES, AND NEW INTERVIEWS WITH REBA MCENTIRE, LEANN RIMES, KACEY MUSGRAVES, RHIANNON GIDDENS, BEVERLY D’ANGELO AND OTHERS

AVAILABLE OCTOBER 6 VIA UMe

COUNTRY LEGEND WOULD HAVE TURNED 85 TODAY

Widely considered one of the greatest and most influential singers of all time, Patsy Cline, in her brief but extraordinary career, made a colossal impact on country and pop music. Born Virginia Patterson Hensley in Winchester, Va., Cline was a trailblazer who defined modern country music, and broke down barriers of gender, class and genre. In her music and her life, she set a standard of authenticity towards which artists still strive. After years of hard work to overcome industry biases and her own personal hardships, she achieved enormous success, only to have it punctured by uncanny premonitions and her untimely death at age 30 in 1963.

Today, on what would have been her 85th birthday, UMe is proud to announce that Cline’s remarkable life and enduring legacy will be honored in When Patsy Cline Was… Crazy, a new DVD, available October 6, that collects the acclaimed PBS documentary, Patsy Cline: American Masters, and a wealth of exclusive bonus material comprised of themed additional interview footage and rare vintage performances. Pre-order When Patsy Cline Was… Crazy now: https://UMe.lnk.to/PatsyDoc

With exclusive access to the Cline estate, the film, hailed by Yahoo! as “a beautifully assembled salute to one of the most important singers in country-music history” and “a work of fresh scholarship that’s also highly entertaining,” features rare performances of such Cline classics as “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray,” “Come On In,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Crazy,” “You Made Me Love You” and more, alongside exclusive archival interviews with Cline’s contemporaries, and new interviews with a wide range of artists who have been influenced by Cline: Reba McEntire, Wanda Jackson, LeeAnn Rimes, Kacey Musgraves, Beverly D’Angelo, Bill Anderson, Rhiannon Giddens, Callie Khouri, Mickey Guyton, Terri Clark, and more. The bonus material contains nearly an hour of additional interviews as well as Willie Nelson performing his original version of “Crazy” and Clark, unplugged in her living room, playing a verse of “Walkin’ After Midnight.” An accompanying booklet includes classic photos of Cline and an essay by noted author Robert K. Oermann.

“It’s been such a privilege to tell the story of Patsy Cline,” said Emmy-nominated director and producer Barbara J. Hall (Song by Song, Titanic: Band of Courage). “For me, her story exceeds her musical accomplishments. She is in a rare class of women who simply set out to achieve their dreams and through those efforts left an indelible mark.”

Narrated by Rosanne Cash and produced by TH Entertainment LLC., When Patsy Cline Was… Crazy examines the roots of Cline’s impact in both personal and cultural terms to illuminate how she arrived at a pivotal moment in the evolution of American culture and, with Decca Records producer Owen Bradley, synthesized country, pop and rock in a new way to create the Nashville Sound.

Cline boldly bucked female conventions of the 1950s with her fashion sense, her decision to divorce, her support of fellow female artists, and her assertive ambition to get opportunities equal to those of her male Nashville peers, such as the same kind of headliner billing and radio airplay, particularly after breaking free of her unfavorable contract with Four Star Records. Six years after her national breakthrough on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts (CBS, 1957), she died in a plane crash returning home from a benefit performance. In 1973, ten years after her death, she became the first female solo artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her many posthumous honors include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a U.S. postage stamp. She was also portrayed in the Oscar-winning feature film Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) by D’Angelo and in Sweet Dreams (1985) by Jessica Lange.

DARK ROAST - Horror-Comedy

Green Room meets Tucker & Dale vs. Evil in horror-comedy

DARK ROAST

Trailer, poster, & screening information announced

Like Green Room meets Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Dark Roast is a blood-splattered horror-comedy of errors with a punk rock ethos. Fakecharmer Productions is proud to present the official trailer and poster for the short film.

It's Halloween night, and Vanessa and Nathan, members of the punk band Piss Bucket, have their biggest show yet lined up. This could be just the ticket they need to leave their routine existence behind. All they need to do to make the show is kill time until the end of their shift serving coffee behind the counter of the Grind Haus. But when bodies start to drop and threatening phone calls from a psychopathic killer pour in they soon realize time isn’t the only thing being killed. To escape their mundane lives slinging coffee they'll need to escape alive first.

Dark Roast will have its world premiere at the NOLA Horror Film Fest in New Orleans, LA on September 23, followed by October screenings at the Sanford International Film Festival in Sanford, ME and the Halloween International Film Festival in Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Dark Roast is written and directed by Topher Hansson, an up-and-coming multi-hyphenate who also stars in the film alongside Kati McCarron, J.D. Achille, Chris Goodwin, Jose Guns Alves, Codey Gillum, Chris Fisher, and Dane C. Volke.

The project was borne out of frustration. Being trapped at a mundane desk job inspired Hansson to write characters looking to escape death, both literally and figuratively. Dark Roast was initially conceived as a feature film but was condescend into a short due to the limited resources available. Hansson plans to use Dark Roast as a calling card in the hopes of producing the full feature. He explains, "The tone and premise reflect what the eventual feature will bring, in addition to more story, more heart, and much more blood."

Additional festival screenings are in the works, so be sure to follow Dark Roast on Facebook for updates.
